Your guide to the best restaurants and bars on the Costa Blanca
Every month we focus on one of the many excellent restaurants or chefs in the area. This month we focus on La Provence in Moraira, run by Peter and Helena Meutstege from Holland.
Four years ago Peter and his wife Helena left their native Holland to fulfil a lifelong ambition to come to Spain and open their own restaurant. Peter has been in the catering industry for many years and in November 1999, he and Helena said goodbye to their friends and family in Holland and headed for Spain. Simon, the chef, joined them as well to – as he then said - stay for 1 year. Luckily he likes it that much and he is still with them.
Fortunately for us, Moraira is where he chose to set up his business and in January 2000, he took over La Provence Restaurant, just off the sea-front on the Avenida de Madrid. Simon with his small team of fellow magicians (Mike and Eric), create mouth watering international dishes, whilst Peter and Dave, who is the wine specialist, take care of their customers in the dining area.
Although not luxurious, La Provence is a cozy restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere, where you can expect quality food and friendly service in a pleasant and hospitable environment. Peter is well known in the area, and many of his regular guests have become firm friends.
You can choose from the innovative and extensive menu or opt for one of the fixed four-course menus. There are 6 different fixed menus, a regularly changing special menu and, of course, several vegetarian dishes. The menu as well as the fixed menus have just been renewed with again delightful dishes from the ‘Cuisine of the World’. And if you want a change, just have a look at the big green board with several and frequently changing specialties.
All main courses are served with sauteed potatoes, a fresh salad of crudités and a basket with a variety of steamed, fresh vegetables. La Provence is always trying to comply with guests' wishes as much as they can and therefore you now also have a choice for ‘small portions’.
With such a wide choice of menus and dishes, you will undoubtedly find something to your liking. And when at the end of your meal, you ask for the bill, you will be not be unpleasantly surprised by any hidden charges for bread & butter, appetiser and VAT - it's all included.
